Nottingham Conference: Conservatives say NH-yeS!

At the annual Conservative Spring conference, held this year in Nottingham, the Conservatives led by David Cameron gave the NHS their full support and highlighted the unnecessary pressures added the workloads of doctors, nurses and medical staff in the NHS caused by increased bureaucracy and top-down targets dictated by Whitehall.

David Cameron has declared the NHS his passion, and pledged to "back it, build it, and improve it for everyone".

Just hours before speaking at a rally in the capital, Mr Cameron described the junior doctors' job selection system as a "shambles", and called on the Government to scrap it; while Mr Lansley said flawed Government attempts to modernise medical careers risked undermining the morale and the future of the medical profession. He asked: "What is the point of expanding medical school places and then destroying the career progression of juniors?"

The Conference also featured speeches from George Osborne, William Hague and Andrew Lansley.

In his speech to the conference, Shadow Chancellor George Osborne called on Gordon Brown to make Budget Day "NHS Day".

Mr Osborne stated: "He should set out the National Health Service's budget for the next three years, so the health professionals can start planning for the long term now. We've already had three year budgets for the Home Office, the schools capital budget and the Treasury itself. So why not the NHS? He must have done the sums. Let's have them."
