Graham backs calls for independent incinerator study

Graham has lent his support to Halton Action Group Against the Incinerator (HAGATI). The campaign  group, led by local residents Alan Gorry and Jeff Meehan, are calling for an independent study into the health effects upon those living both upwind and downwind from an incinerator. A previous survey on the subject has been used by the developers, Ineos Chlor, in support of their proposals. However, this survey has not been accepted by various permitting authorities for a number of reasons. Therefore, HAGATI are proposing that an independent and comprehensive study be conducted by experienced academics at the University of Lancaster.

Graham Evans MP has backed this proposal, commenting "A very large number of residents in the area are extremely concerned about these proposals for an incinerator, and the potential negative impact an incinerator could have on their quality of life and health. I believe an independent study would be in the interestes of all residents."

During the election campaign, Graham supported local residents and campaigned strongly against proposals for incinerators at numerous sites across Cheshire. Now he has been elected as the local Member of Parliament, he is determined to continue to stand up for his constituents. Explaining his stance Graham said, "As a Conservative, I want to support businesses in the community and Ineos Chlor is a vital local employer. However, it is very important that the views of residents are not simply ignored and that key planning decisions are not rammed through despite overwhelming local opposition."

"The planning system designed by John Prescott and the last Labour Government was bad for democracy, bad for the environment and bad for business. I am hopeful that the new Conservative-led Government will take steps to reform the planning system and ensure that local communities will be able to determine the appropriate level of new development for their area."
