Holocaust Memorial Day - Lest We Forget

January 27th is Holocaust Memorial Day. This is the day when we and other European countries remember the victims of the Holocaust, and other genocides in countries like Rwanda, Yugoslavia and Iraq.

The theme for HMD 2010 is The Legacy of Hope, which offers an opportunity to listen to the voices from the Holocaust and Nazi persecution, and to make the lessons of hope for a safer, inclusive society where the differences between us are respected a reality today and in the future.

It is important for us to remember these tragic events so as to avoid history repeating itself. The 27th January (1945) is the date that Russian forces liberated Auschwitz and soon after the allies, including soldiers from Cheshire, helped liberate Belson Concentration camp, unfortunately too late to save thousands of starving inmates, including Anne Frank the now famous diarist. It is a powerful reminder that, to use a famous phrase,  “all that is needed for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing”.
